The past few months the library has hosted several unique and interesting skype events. In early March 3rd graders took a virtual field trip to Joshua Tree National Park. Students learned about the types of animals and vegetation that make the park special. The park ranger took us on a tour, showing us those iconic Joshua trees! What a treat!

Later in March, 2nd grade students had the opportunity to skype with illustrator Scott Magoon. Scott's book, Rescue and Jessica, was awarded the Schneider Family Book Award this past January at the Youth Media Awards. As a side note, the ceremony was in Seattle this year, it was thrilling to hear first hand the Caldecott, Newbery and Coretta Scott King awards announced live! Students were taken through an "easter egg hunt" of sorts where Mr. Magoon pointed out several illustrations that had special significance. He then showed students how he uses Photoshop to illustrate! I heard more than one student announce that they intended to become an illustrator when they grew up!

In April 5th grade will skype with author, Robin Yardi, first grade will play animal mystery skype and third grade will play United States geography mystery skype. So many wonderful experiences are open to students, and all for FREE!
