May and June have been BUSY in the library! After our author visit in late May, we welcomed Sara Jenson, the King County Librarian of the Sammamish branch. She lead an inspiring and informative talk about the summer reading program. This year the theme is "A Universe of Books". The library will not only be hosting story times each week, but will also have space themed events like "making your own universe"! I hope your student was inspired to visit KCLS this summer and will take the reading challenge of reading twenty minutes a day!
Our own Challenger Comets were busy reading away this year, and I am so proud to announce that forty four students completed the Otter and Sasquatch reading challenges! ! Last year only two students took the reading challenge. Way to go Comets! These fine friends will enjoy a pizza party Friday, June 14th at 3pm in the library!
Next year the reading challenge will be very different. The lssaquah librarians agreed that the Sasquatch nominees for next year were geared more for middle school students, so I decided to rework the challenge and will use the Battle of the Books format. There will be eight books for students to read throughout the year in "rounds". Each round will include two books and students will have about eight weeks to complete one round. At the end of the round the students will vote for their favorite of the two, and it will move up the ranks to battle it out for Challenger's favorite book! There are two separate battles, one for grades 1-3 and one for grades 3-5. Kindergarten students will be encouraged to participate in book bingo each month as their reading challenge.
The best part of the book battle is students had the opportunity to vote for two books to be entered into the battle. This "Kid Choice" round will be the fourth and final round. More information will follow via email and on my website.
Thank you so much for reading!
